Equine Magazine Research

Where is there a gap in the market?
What age group reads/buys magazines the most?
What genre would sell well?
What features will make it different from the other magazines in the same genre?
How popular is the genre of magazine?

Horse Magazine

  • British Horse ( Fellows Media Ltd ) : 68,092 ; 3.9% of all magazine sales
  • Horse riding is more popular than rugby, fishing or cricket in the UK. Meaning that more people would buy horse magazines than those other sports.
  • The UK boasts a world-class, multi-million-pound equestrian export industry - big market for people to buy horse magazines.
  • Britain's equine Industry has a combined economic impact of £7bn, over half of which derives from horse racing.
  • It impacts a broad range of communities, it's enjoyed by those with affluent backgrounds - lots of disposable income.
  • Over 180 charity race days are run by the UK’s 60 racecourses each year, raising at least £1.8m each year.
  • The UK equestrian exports industry has seen huge growth in recent years – estimated to be around 30-50%.
  • Circulation ( ABC Jan-Dec 2013) 44,458.
  • Horse & Hound ( IPC Media Ltd ) : 49,324 ; -5.5% / Your Horse ( Bauer Consumer Media ) : 28,126 ; -1.6% / Horse Magazine ( IPC Media Ltd ) : 14,451 ; -6.3% / shows there's a gap in the market for something new.

Features of a equine magazines:

  • Competitions
  • Horses for sale/loan
  • Horse care
  • Horse riding tips
  • Rider blogs
  • Famous riders
  • News articles
Features equine magazines don't have:

  • Best rider/horse wear
  • What to look for when buying a horse
  • Parts of a horse
  • Training a young horse
  • Basic care

  • Bright contrasting colours
  • Horse is main feature
  • Masthead is overlapping and stands out
  • Barcode is in the bottom right hand corner-not very noticeable
  • Headline is yellow-only yellow font on the page so is a main article-makes the audience look at that article first
  • Banner selling line is quite small and dark fonted so not very noticeable
  • Anchorage is just under the horse's nose so therefore quite prominant. Also is against the horses bay coat which makes it stand out brightly-personal story that's quite tragic, makes readers want to buy it because they want to prevent what happened to the person. Also larger speech marks to show the reader that this is another reader/persons story
  • Smaller photo of famous rider on his horse-audience is this attracted to this as they could be an inspiration
  • Plug at the bottom right of the page against a blue background with a white font to attract readers to buy it so they can win things for themselves and/or their horse
  • Website is just under the masthead and like the banner selling line it's not very noticeable however, they're both close to the masthead so if people look close enough they can still see it.
  • There's a section of top stories at the left hand bottom corner to help the audience see what the magazine contains
  • All the cover lines are on the left meaning it's the first thing the audience see when they look at the magazine (read from left to right) and it makes the horse the main part of the magazine.

  • Once again the masthead is white so stands out but is smaller
  • The horse and rider are still the main vocal point on the magazine
  • Colour fonts are all similar: white, red, black
  • Barcode is bottom right hand corner again
  • Headline is in white but has a big font and links to the main photo-very famous rider and horse that would attract all horsey readers
  • Adds a box with days until the Olympics (big events)
  • 'News exclusive' is is red which attracts the attention of the audience
  • Has a smaller photo of Greenwich on the top left hand corner-links to plug next to it-big event and showground for riders
  • Plug is very attracting-contrasting colours
  • Colours can be different on same line-creating contrast, adding brightness and attracting the audience
  • All magazines have a coverline on how to's/help with 'your' horse-makes it personal for the audience and helps them

Things I've found most equine magazines have:
  • Help and advice
  • All coverlines on the left hand side of the magazine
  • Horse is the main object of the magazine
  • Colours usually include: white, black, yellow or red
  • At least with one coverline with someone's personal story
  • Always a plug to attract readers
  • Colours usually contrast against eachother
  • Always have the website and banner selling line close to the title
